Ghana — the Black Stars return
Ghana sealed qualification by beating Comoros 1–0, with Mohammed Kudus scoring the decisive goal in the second half. It is the Black Stars’ fifth World Cup appearance, and Black Stars’ side arrive with genuine quality. Antoine Semenyo and a settled squad give Ghana a platform to reach the knockout rounds — and potentially beyond.
The Black Stars drew 0-0 with England before losing 2-1 to Croatia on the final matchday, advancing as one of the best third-place teams. They face Colombia in the Round of 32 in Kansas City on Friday, July 3.
Senegal — Africa’s most dangerous side
Senegal arrive as arguably the strongest African team in the tournament. The reigning AFCON champions have Sadio Mané, a settled defensive structure and the experience of their 2022 round-of-16 run to build on. If any African side is going deep in 2026, Senegal are the most likely candidate.
It was not always comfortable — Senegal lost to both France and Norway in the group stage before a 5-0 demolition of Iraq on the final matchday sent them through as a third-place qualifier. They face Belgium in Seattle on Wednesday, July 1.
Ivory Coast — Zaha, Haller and unfinished business
Ivory Coast qualified with a squad that blends experienced campaigners with emerging talent. After their shock group-stage exit as hosts at AFCON 2023, Les Éléphants arrive with a point to prove on football’s biggest stage.
Les Éléphants backed that up with actions, finishing as Group E runners-up after wins over Ecuador and Curaçao either side of a 2-1 defeat to Germany. They face Norway in Arlington, Texas on Tuesday, June 30.
Cape Verde — the tournament’s great story
Cape Verde erupted in celebration after qualifying for the first time in their history — and then went and reached the Round of 32. The Blue Sharks drew all three group-stage matches, including a goalless draw with Spain, to finish as Group H runners-up. They face Argentina in Miami on Friday, July 3, and the football world will be watching.
