THE Word of Faith Group of Schools (WOFGOS), Abuja, in partnership with the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) is launching a major tree-planting campaign to build climate-resilient urban communities.
The initiative, which was inaugurated recently in Abuja in collaboration with environmental stakeholders, aimed to cultivate about 400 exotic tree species across Abuja school premises,
The initiative also seeks to boost the federal capital territory’s green canopy and combat the devastating effects of urban global warming in line with the 2026 World Environment Day.
Speaking at the event, WOFGOS Administrator General, Daisy Idahosa, described a healthy environment as essential for human survival and commended students for championing environmental conservation.
In a keynote address, UNIC Director, Ronald Kayanja, represented by Dr. Oluseyi Soremekun, warned that global warming indicators continue to worsen worldwide.
He noted that recent years have recorded unprecedented temperatures, with the world temporarily exceeding the 1.5 degree Celsius warming threshold.
According to him, climate change is damaging health, destroying homes, worsening hunger, and threatening vulnerable communities globally.
He urged developed countries to fulfill climate finance commitments to developing nations to protect livelihoods and strengthen economies.
The school’s Parents and Teachers Association(PTA) Chairman, Joe Ukairo, said WOFGOS advanced the celebration by a day to encourage wider community participation.
Ukairo stressed that building resilience today is critical to securing a sustainable future for younger generations.
The Chairman of the organising committee, Dr Adah Daniel appreciated dignitaries, parents, and administrators for supporting the environmental campaign.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the first commemorative tree was planted by Mrs Kachala Fatima, President, Association of Flowers, Nursery and Landscaping Practitioners of Abuja (AFNALPA).
The event also featured the inauguration of the school’s Friends of the Environment Club and several student competitions.
Awards were also presented for essay writing, cleanest classroom, and materials recovery initiatives while students entertained guests with musical and cultural performances.
Notable attendees included FCTA Parks and Recreation Director, Dihis Joseph; NES President, Dr. Efe Okobia; and the Royal Father of Durumi 4, Danjuma Madaki.
