Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday called on the international community to ensure the safety of global maritime routes and protect seafarers from conflict-related threats. His remarks came at the G7 Summit outreach session, just days after three Indian sailors were killed in a US military strike on a merchant vessel near the Gulf of Oman.
Addressing the session titled “Forging New Partnerships and Rebuilding International Solidarity,” PM Modi stressed that seafarers play a crucial role in connecting countries through global trade and must be able to work without fear.
“It is our responsibility to ensure the safety of the seafarers who connect all nations through global maritime trade. We must ensure that maritime routes remain secure and that seafarers can perform their duties without fear,” he said.
Why did PM Modi raise the issue of maritime security?
The Prime Minister’s comments came in the backdrop of the recent deaths of three Indian crew members aboard the tanker Settebello. According to reports, the vessel was among ships targeted by US forces near Oman after allegedly attempting to breach a US blockade of Iranian ports. The incident triggered concerns in India over the safety of Indian seafarers working in conflict-prone regions.
PM Modi noted that disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important shipping routes for energy and trade, have affected the global economy and led to the loss of Indian lives.

The Prime Minister welcomed ongoing efforts aimed at restoring peace in West Asia and expressed hope for greater stability in the region.
He said conflicts in the region have caused significant loss of life and property in countries that share friendly relations with India. PM Modi also highlighted the importance of maintaining secure maritime routes to prevent further disruptions to global trade.
Beyond maritime security, PM Modi said that trust has become the most important strategic asset in an increasingly interconnected world. He argued that energy security, food security, health security, cyber security and economic prosperity are no longer confined within national borders.
