Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has thanked Pakistan and Qatar for their role in facilitating the recent understanding between the United States and Iran, describing it as an important opportunity for peace.

Pakistan and Qatar reportedly played key mediation roles during the negotiations, with Islamabad being involved in diplomatic efforts from the early stages of the process.

Meloni welcomes US-Iran understanding

In a post on X, Meloni said Italy, along with France, Germany and the United Kingdom, welcomed the recent agreement reached between the United States and Iran.

She expressed gratitude to all parties involved in the mediation efforts and specifically acknowledged the contributions of Pakistan and Qatar.

According to Meloni, the agreement represents a valuable opportunity for peace and should not be allowed to slip away. She added that Italy remains ready to support diplomatic efforts aimed at reaching a broader and more comprehensive agreement.

Italy reiterates position on Iran’s nuclear programme

Meloni also reiterated Italy’s position that Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons and stressed the importance of ensuring freedom of maritime navigation.

She said Italy is prepared to contribute to an international naval presence aimed at fully reopening the Strait of Hormuz, subject to coordination with allies and the necessary parliamentary approvals.

Remarks on Lebanon

The Italian Prime Minister also highlighted the need for an end to hostilities in Lebanon.

She stated that Italy would continue supporting Lebanon’s sovereignty and work alongside international partners to promote stability in the region.

European leaders issue joint statement

Leaders of France, Germany and the United Kingdom joined Italy in issuing a joint statement welcoming the memorandum of understanding announced between the United States and Iran.

The European leaders congratulated both governments on the diplomatic breakthrough and thanked all those involved in facilitating the talks, including Pakistan, Qatar and other mediators.

The statement emphasised the importance of completing detailed negotiations and ensuring the agreement is implemented swiftly and fully. The leaders also expressed their readiness to assist in advancing the process.
