Venezuela Earthquake: Google sent early warnings of earthquake before people in Venezuela felt the tremors; Here’s how android phones made it possible

Two powerful earthquakes, measuring 7.1 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck Venezuela, causing widespread destruction and collapsing several buildings. The back-to-back tremors are being described as the strongest earthquakes to hit the country in nearly a century. Amid the devastation, many users on X noticed something remarkable, Google had sent earthquake alerts to their Android phones before they actually felt the shaking.

One user shared a screenshot showing a Google notification warning about a possible earthquake. The alert estimated that a magnitude 6.2 earthquake had been detected about 341 kilometers (212 miles) away.

How Did Google Know an Earthquake Was Coming?

The answer lies in your smartphone. Most modern smartphones have a sensor called an accelerometer. This sensor normally rotates your screen when you tilt your phone. But it can also detect vibrations in the ground.

When a phone detects vibrations that may be caused by an earthquake, it sends a signal along with its approximate location to Google’s Android Earthquake Alerts System.

Google then compares data from many phones in the same area. If several devices detect similar vibrations at the same time, Google’s system can quickly determine that an earthquake may be occurring and send warnings to nearby users.

World’s Largest Earthquake Detection Network

More than 2 billion Android devices are connected to this system worldwide. Because of this massive network, Google effectively operates the world’s largest distributed earthquake detection system.

Why Do Alerts Arrive Before You Feel the Quake?

Earthquakes do not happen as a single shock. They travel in different types of waves. The first waves, known as Primary Waves (P-waves), travel very fast, around 6 kilometers per second, but usually cause less damage.

The more destructive Secondary Waves (S-waves) travel slower, at around 3 to 4 kilometers per second.

Android phones can detect the faster P-waves and immediately send information to Google’s servers. Since phone signals travel at nearly the speed of light, Google can analyze the data and send alerts before the slower, stronger S-waves arrive.

Google explains it simply: the system is “racing the speed of light against the speed of an earthquake”, and light travels much faster. For comparison, light travels at about 299,792 kilometers per second, far quicker than earthquake waves.

How This Helped During the Venezuela Quake

In the Venezuela case, the earthquake’s epicentre was about 341 kilometers away from some users who received alerts. This gave Google’s system enough time to collect information from multiple phones, confirm the earthquake, and send warnings before the strongest shaking reached those locations.

Two Types of Android Earthquake Alerts

Android provides two kinds of earthquake notifications:

  • Be Aware Alert: Warns users about light shaking and gives them a heads-up.
  • Take Action Alert: Issued before moderate to severe shaking, allowing people to take protective measures.

Tapping either alert opens safety information, emergency guidance, and a map showing the estimated location and magnitude of the earthquake.

Is the Feature Available in India?

Yes. The Android Earthquake Alerts System has been available in India since 2023 for devices running Android 5 or newer. To receive alerts, users must have an active internet connection through Wi-Fi or mobile data. Those who do not want to receive earthquake warnings can disable the feature through their phone’s settings.
