The final version of the agreement reached between the United States and Iran may allow Tehran to charge fees for maritime services in the Strait of Hormuz, according to a report by Iran’s Fars News Agency.
A person familiar with the negotiations said that changes made at the last stage of the talks gave more importance to the role of Iran and Oman in managing the strategic waterway.
Final deal gives Iran and Oman a bigger role
According to the report, the final text of the agreement clearly states that Iran and Oman will decide how maritime services in the Strait of Hormuz will be managed in the future.
The source said earlier drafts had recognised Iran’s authority, but the final version goes further by giving both Tehran and Muscat a greater role in the administration of the shipping route.
Report says Iran may charge transit-related fees
The source claimed that the revised agreement effectively accepts Iran’s right to collect fees related to maritime services in the Strait of Hormuz.
This comes even though US President Donald Trump had said after the agreement was announced that ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz would be able to do so “toll free.”

The United States and Iran recently reached an agreement after nearly four months of conflict. The understanding is expected to pave the way for talks on Iran’s nuclear programme and possible sanctions relief.
Only a few details of the agreement have been officially released so far, although Iranian media have reported that the deal contains 14 key points.
Iran says full details will be released later
Before the agreement was announced, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the complete details would be made public only after the deal is formally signed.
