US-Iran deal: Iran says ‘Islamabad Memorandum’ likely to be signed on…; what we know so far

US-Iran deal: Amid speculations of Iran and the United States finally signing a historic deal to end the West Asia conflict, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei on Saturday confirmed that the two countries are likely to sign the ‘Islamabad Memorandum’ in coming days.

What did Baghaei say about US-Iran deal?

Baghaei clarified that the US-Iran deal will not be signed on Sunday, and said there is no definitive timeline for the signing of the agreement, and cautioned trusting reports that predict an imminent breakthrough, Iranian state media reported.

According to Baghaei, while a potential deal is likely in the coming days, the signing of the memorandum is still not finalized.

What is the ‘Islamabad Memorandum’?

The Iranian spokesperson’s comments come amid reports that Tehran and Washington are closer than ever to inking a framework agreement dubbed the ‘Islamabad Memorandum’, which includes a 60-day extension of the ceasefire, reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and a framework for further talks on Iran’s nuclear programme.

The proposed deal envisages a 60-day ceasefire between the warring sides “on all fronts”, including Lebanon, beginning immediately upon signing, aiming to foster a temporary period of stability during which broader negotiations could continue and a permanent deal to end the conflict can be negotiated.

Under the interim agreement, the United States has offered to lift the naval blockade of Iranian ports and providing limited sanctions relief, Iran’s semi-official Mehr News agency reported.

US diplomatic sources confirmed that sanctions relief was on the table, but stressed that it would be granted “based on the progression of the deal and continued engagement in good faith”, although no specific timeline has been outlined, CNN reported.

US-Iran deal: Disagreements remain despite progress

Notably, despite significant progress in negotiations, major disagreements remain between the two sides, particularly on the Hormuz waterway and Iran’s nuclear program.

Iran insists preserving its right to uranium enrichment and maintaining a role in managing traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, while the US demands restrictions on Tehran’s nuclear programme and have rejected reports suggesting that billions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets would be released immediately upon signing.

Pak PM claims US-Iran deal ‘in next 24 hours’

Earlier in the day, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif claimed that the US-Iran peace dealis “closer than ever”, and will be finalised “in the next 24 hours”, followed by technical level talks.

“We are closer to a peace deal than ever before. With finalisation likely expected in the next 24 hours, Pakistan is preparing for the electronic signing of the peace deal immediately after, followed by technical-level talks next week,” Sharif wrote on X.

“We would like to thank United States of America and Islamic Republic of Iran for their ongoing commitment during the negotiations, and we extend our sincere appreciation to our brothers in the region for their support. We are confident that this historic peace deal will form a strong foundation for lasting peace,” he added.
