The United States and Iran have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the ongoing conflict, marking a potential turning point in tensions between the two countries. The document was signed by US President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance and Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, according to a senior US official quoted by Reuters.

The agreement is expected to pave the way for de-escalation, with key provisions including the immediate reopening of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz and the lifting of the US blockade on Iran. Details of the deal are likely to be made public within the next 24 to 48 hours, while technical discussions are scheduled to begin later this week.

What does the US-Iran deal include?

Speaking alongside Emmanuel Macron during the G7 Summit, Trump confirmed that the deal has already been signed and that a formal ceremony will take place in Geneva on June 19. He added that ships have already started moving through the Strait of Hormuz, with full reopening expected by Friday after mine-clearing operations are completed.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes, and its reopening is expected to stabilise global energy markets. Trump noted that oil prices have already seen a sharp decline following the announcement.

Will Iran stop its nuclear programme?

A key highlight of the agreement is Iran’s reported commitment to not develop or possess nuclear weapons. Trump stated that Iran has agreed to strict monitoring measures to ensure compliance.

He emphasised that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons was a central objective of the negotiations. According to him, the new leadership in Iran played a crucial role in reaching the deal, helping avoid further military escalation.

What about sanctions and future talks?

Trump clarified that sanctions relief for Iran will depend on its behaviour and adherence to the agreement. He said that easing of sanctions will only begin if Iran follows through on its commitments.
