US President Donald Trump has announced that no tolls will be charged for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz during a 60-day ceasefire period. He also said that after this period, tolls could still be imposed if a broader peace deal is not reached, calling the United States a “Guardian Angel” for West Asian countries.

What did Donald Trump say about Hormuz tolls?

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said ships will not be charged any tolls during the ceasefire window. He added that even after the 60 days, there will still be no tolls unless the United States decides to impose them as part of a future agreement.

He linked this possibility to what he described as America’s role in protecting and supporting countries in West Asia. Trump also claimed that any future charges could be considered “reimbursement of costs” for US involvement in the region.

Is Iran really closing the Strait of Hormuz?

At the same time, tensions increased after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) declared the Strait of Hormuz closed, warning ships to avoid the area. The move came despite a 60-day ceasefire agreement between Washington and Tehran.

However, the US Central Command reported that commercial shipping continued normally, with dozens of vessels passing through the waterway carrying oil and cargo. The announcement raised global concerns because the Strait of Hormuz is a key route for global energy supplies.

Can US-Iran talks in Switzerland ease tensions?

A senior Iranian delegation has travelled to Switzerland for fresh negotiations with the United States. Talks are expected to include nuclear issues and the fragile Lebanon ceasefire. US Vice President JD Vance said he remains hopeful that progress can be made, although tensions remain high.

Iranian officials have accused the US of failing to fully implement earlier commitments, while Washington says it is still committed to stabilising the region. Meanwhile, clashes in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah have further complicated the situation.
