Spanish defender, Marc Cucurella, has joined La Liga giant, Real Madrid, from Chelsea.
Cucurella’s departure from Chelsea was announced in a club statement issued on the official website of the English Premier League club on Monday.
According to the statement, the left-back joined Real Madrid on a permanent transfer.
The amount of the transfer fee was however not disclosed by the club.
“Marc Cucurella has completed a permanent transfer to Spanish La Liga side Real Madrid.
“Everyone at Chelsea FC would like to thank Marc for his efforts during his time at the club and for the role he played in our recent achievements.
“We wish him every success as he begins the next stage of his career.” the club wrote.
Cucurella joined Chelsea in the summer of 2022 from Brighton & Hove Albion and was part of the team that lifted the UEFA Europa Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup last year.
During Cucurella’s stay at Stamford Bridge, the 27-year-old defender regularly represented the Spanish national team and won the UEFA European Championships in 2024.
Though considered one of Premier League’s brightest left-back with his explosive pattern of play, Cucurella’s transfer to the Los Blancos signalled that he is not part of the plan of Xabi Alonso, Chelsea’s new manager.
Recall that Chelsea had last month signed the former Real Madrid player as their new manager following the sacking of Liam Rosenior.
Alonso had strongly been tipped to make a huge change in the Chelsea squad with Cucurella emerging as the first player to be relieved by the Spanish manager.
Meanwhile, prior to his transfer, Cucurella had fallen out of favour at the Stamford Bridge with an interview he criticised the club’s ownership over the team’s poor performance.
