Gunmen have killed a soldier and reportedly abducted several residents during coordinated attacks on communities in Ogun State.

The incident occurred at a private dredging site in Magbon Etido community in Mowe, where the attackers were said to have launched an assault that left a soldier dead and another injured.

According to reports, the assailants had attempted to kidnap an expatriate working at the dredging site, but the target narrowly escaped.

The attackers were also said to have carried out abductions in the nearby Karanla community before encountering resistance from security operatives.

Confirming the incident, the Ogun State Police Command described the attack as an isolated criminal act rather than an operation linked to banditry.

In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said, “Regrettably, a soldier on security duty lost his life during the incident, while another sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment.”

He added that security forces responded swiftly to the situation.

“Following the report, Police operatives, in collaboration with the Military, swiftly mobilized to the area and commenced coordinated operations to apprehend those responsible,” the statement read.

The command noted that preliminary investigations do not suggest any connection to organised bandit activities, adding that efforts are ongoing to track down the perpetrators.

“Preliminary findings do not indicate any connection between the incident and banditry activities. Investigations and tactical operations remain ongoing,” Babaseyi said.

Authorities have since assured residents that the situation is under control, with enhanced security presence in the affected communities.

The police also urged the public to remain calm and vigilant, stressing that there is no cause for alarm as operations continue to restore normalcy.
