PM Modi to visit US in December! Sergio Gor makes big claim, but why is Washington inviting PM Modi repeatedly?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi may visit the United States in December this year, according to US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor. While the Indian government has not officially confirmed the visit, the proposed trip is expected to coincide with the G20 Summit, where Modi is likely to participate.

Speaking at the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) Leadership Summit 2026, Gor said the United States is looking forward to welcoming the Prime Minister once again, although no official schedule has been announced.

Marco Rubio invited Modi to the US

Gor revealed that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio invited Prime Minister Modi to visit the United States during his recent trip to India. However, Modi did not give an immediate response to the invitation.

He also expressed optimism that the interim trade agreement between India and the US could be finalised soon. According to Gor, trade ties between the two countries continue to strengthen, with businesses from both sides expanding investment and commercial partnerships.

The US is also planning to deepen its strategic partnership with India. Gor announced that Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to make his second visit to India later this year.

He said the US considers India a reliable and strong strategic partner and added that American companies’ confidence in investing in India has reached a historic high.

Trade negotiations in the final phase

According to Gor, discussions on the bilateral trade agreement have entered the final stage. However, negotiations remain complex because both sides still need to reach consensus on thousands of products and several legal provisions.

He reiterated that US President Donald Trump considers relations with India a priority and is keen to strengthen cooperation between the two countries.

USISPF Honorary Senior Advisor Al Mason also said India-US ties have gained fresh momentum and continue to move in a positive direction.

Experts urge caution despite improving ties

India-US relations have faced challenges during President Trump’s second term, particularly over tariff policies and Washington’s perceived support for Pakistan. Although relations have improved in recent months, analysts believe India is proceeding cautiously.

Experts say that if Prime Minister Modi’s proposed US visit takes place and the trade agreement is finalised, it could significantly strengthen strategic and economic ties between the two countries.

However, American analyst Michael Rubin has advised India to remain cautious. Following Rubio’s earlier visit to India, Rubin said Prime Minister Modi should avoid rushing into a US visit. He also noted that Rubio visited India after touring 31 other countries, suggesting India’s relative priority in Washington’s diplomatic agenda.

Rubin further pointed to public remarks by President Trump and Vice President JD Vance expressing support for Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir, saying such developments have contributed to India’s cautious approach towards the United States.
