Former United States President Barack Obama has unveiled a new portrait of himself and ex-First Lady Michelle Obama, created by Nigerian-born artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby.
Obama announced the unveiling via a Facebook post on Monday night, describing the Los Angeles-based artist as “gifted” and expressing excitement about the unveiling of what he confirmed as their “first portrait together.”
He added that the portrait would be showcased in the Hope and Change lobby of the Obama Presidential Center, where visitors will be able to view the artwork beginning on Juneteenth, the annual U.S. holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the country.
The former president wrote: “It was great joining Njideka Akunyili Crosby — a gifted Nigerian-born, Los Angeles-based artist — to unveil our first portrait together.

“This piece reflects so many chapters of Michelle and my story, and we’re thrilled that it will be on display in the Hope and Change lobby at the Obama Presidential Center starting this Juneteenth.”
Njideka is the daughter of the former Director-General of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), late Dora Akunyili.
