Two clinical finishes from Nicolas Pepe guided Ivory Coast to a deserved 2-0 victory over Curacao in Philadelphia, securing a historic place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout rounds for the first time.
Needing only a draw to progress from Group E, Emerse Fae’s side showed they had bigger ambitions. They seized control from the opening minutes and rarely looked troubled against the tournament debutants.
The breakthrough arrived just seven minutes in. Curacao failed to deal with a dangerous attack, allowing Yan Diomande to collect the loose ball and square it for Pepe, who calmly slotted home to hand the Elephants an early advantage.
Ivory Coast nearly doubled their lead before the 20-minute mark, but Amad Diallo failed to convert another inviting delivery from the impressive Diomande, dragging his effort wide under pressure.
Curacao, however, refused to back down. Tahith Chong, Jurien Gaari and Leandro Bacuna all tested the Ivorian defence, yet they struggled to create clear-cut opportunities.
Despite their determination, they rarely threatened Yahia Fofana’s goal, reflected by their modest expected goals tally.
The second half saw Curacao push forward with greater urgency, knowing their World Cup hopes were slipping away. Their optimism lasted until the 64th minute when Ibrahim Sangare produced a perfectly weighted pass to release Pepe inside the penalty area.
The former Arsenal winger kept his composure, opening his body before curling an excellent finish beyond Eloy Room to seal the victory.
The result guaranteed Ivory Coast a runners-up finish in Group E and a place in the last 32, while Curacao bowed out after an admirable first appearance on football’s biggest stage.
Curacao Leave with Heads Held High
Although their World Cup journey has ended, Curacao depart with plenty to be proud of.
After suffering a heavy opening defeat to Germany, they responded impressively by holding Ecuador to a goalless draw, thanks largely to Eloy Room’s remarkable 15-save performance that kept their qualification hopes alive until the final group match.
Against Ivory Coast, they fought bravely and showed the resilience that won many admirers throughout the tournament. Their dream ultimately came to an end against a more experienced side, but they proved they belonged on the global stage.
The emotional scenes after the final whistle reflected not just disappointment but genuine belief.
Curacao arrived as one of the tournament’s lowest-ranked nations, yet they competed with courage and confidence, earning respect from fans across the world.
While this chapter ends in heartbreak, their maiden World Cup campaign has laid a strong foundation for the future and they will undoubtedly aim to return even stronger in four years’ time.
