OWO CHURCH MASSACRE JUDGMENT: JUSTICE HAS SPOKEN, THOUGH THE PAIN REMAINS
The Government and people of Ondo State have received with profound appreciation the judgment of the Federal High Court, Abuja, which today convicted and sentenced four persons to death for their involvement in the heinous terrorist attack on St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Owo, on 5th June 2022.
This judgment marks a significant milestone in the long and painful journey towards justice for the innocent worshippers whose lives were brutally cut short during the Pentecost Sunday massacre, as well as for the many survivors and families whose lives were forever altered by that tragic event.
As Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Ondo State, I commend the painstaking efforts of the prosecution, the security agencies, particularly the Department of State Services, witnesses who courageously testified, and the Honourable Court for ensuring that due process was meticulously followed and that justice was neither delayed nor denied.
While no judicial pronouncement can fully heal the wounds inflicted upon the victims, their families, and the entire Owo community, today’s verdict sends a clear and unequivocal message that terrorism, violent extremism, and attacks on innocent citizens will never triumph over the rule of law.
Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, FCA, remains steadfast in his commitment to supporting all lawful measures aimed at securing our communities, protecting freedom of worship, and ensuring that perpetrators of violent crimes are brought to justice irrespective of their status, affiliation, or ideology.
We equally acknowledge that the fight against terrorism is a collective responsibility requiring sustained collaboration among federal and state authorities, security institutions, religious bodies, community leaders, and citizens.
Our thoughts and prayers remain with the families of those who lost their loved ones in this horrific attack. We honour the memory of the departed and reaffirm our commitment that their sacrifice shall never be forgotten.
As a government, we shall continue to advocate for stronger mechanisms for victim support, enhanced security architecture, and the effective prosecution of terrorism-related offences to ensure that such atrocities never recur in Ondo State or anywhere within the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Justice has spoken today. The memories of the victims endure. Our resolve to protect lives and uphold the rule of law remains unshaken.
