The Oyo State Chapter of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) has ordered an indefinite strike action over abducted teachers and pupils.
The union directed all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to withdraw their services from Monday, June 1.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Nigerian Union of Teachers on the 31st of May.
NPO Reported that suspected terrorists had on the 15th of May stormed Ahoro-Esinele Community High School abducting teachers and students of the school.
The terrorists extended the attack to Baptist Nursery and Primary School (Yawota) and L.A Primary School (Esiele), all in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, abducting teachers, pupils and students.
Those kidnapped include 39 students, seven teachers among which is Mrs. Rachael Alamu, the principal of Community High School, Esinele, while two teachers have been killed.
In its statement, the Oyo NUT said that the prolonged captivity of the abductees has created fear and anxiety among teachers and disrupted confidence in the school system.
According to the union, the situation has also discouraged parents from sending their children to school and heightened tension within affected communities.
The NUT stated that the strike is aimed at drawing the attention of government authorities to the need for intensified efforts to secure the immediate and unconditional release of the abducted teachers and pupils.
It urged teachers across the state to comply fully with the directive, remain law-abiding, and ensure their safety while staying away from classrooms throughout the period of the industrial action.
