US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said US would stand by India if the country faces an attack, making the remarks during a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France. The meeting focused on trade, economic cooperation, regional security and global developments. Trump also praised Modi’s leadership and negotiating skills, while highlighting India’s growing importance in international affairs. The comments came as both countries continue efforts to deepen strategic ties amid changing geopolitical challenges in the Indo-Pacific region and West Asia.

‘If India Is Attacked, We Will Be There To Help’

Speaking to reporters alongside PM Modi, Trump said the relationship between the United States and India remains strong and emphasized that Washington would support New Delhi if it faced any external threat.

“I think it is a great relationship. If they were attacked, we would be there to help them,” Trump said. Referring directly to Modi, he added, “If anybody attacks that man, we are going to be there.”

Trump also remarked that India has a major role to play in West Asia as long as Modi remains the country’s leader. His comments are expected to draw attention in India, where policymakers have increasingly strengthened strategic and defence cooperation with the United States.

Trump Praises Modi’s Leadership And Negotiation Skills

During the interaction, Trump described PM Modi as a tough negotiator despite his calm public image. He said Modi strongly represents Indian interests while also maintaining positive ties with the United States.

Trump recalled his visit to India in 2020 and spoke about the large crowds that attended public events during the trip. He said he had a memorable experience in India and expressed hope of visiting the country again in the future.

The US President also noted that trade discussions between the two countries were continuing and described Modi as a formidable counterpart in negotiations.

Focus On Trade, Security And Seafarers

The Modi-Trump meeting also covered trade agreements, energy cooperation and regional security issues. PM Modi highlighted the importance of maritime security and the safety of Indian seafarers working across global shipping routes.

Referring to the emerging Iran peace framework, Modi said freedom of navigation and the protection of sailors should remain a priority. Both leaders agreed on the need for stronger cooperation in technology, defence, energy and supply chain resilience as India-US ties continue to expand.
