Iran has said that the Strait of Hormuz will not return to the way it operated before the recent conflict, with senior Iranian official Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf stating that the strategic waterway will now be managed under new Iranian arrangements.
Speaking to Iranian media while returning from negotiations in Switzerland, Ghalibaf said, “I was among the first to say clearly at the start of the war, everyone should know that management of the Strait of Hormuz will never return to the way it was before the war.” He added, “Iran has never trusted the Americans and never will.”
Hotline to Be Established for Maritime Safety
Despite the strong remarks, Iran has agreed to establish a “telephone hotline” and a coordination centre aimed at preventing misunderstandings and resolving issues involving ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Ghalibaf, the agreement was reached during talks with the United States and other parties. He said, “The US and Iran have reached an agreement to establish coordination mechanisms – a telephone hotline and a center so that if any ambiguity or issue arises, ships can contact that center.”
The Iranian official said the hotline would help maintain safe navigation and ensure smooth traffic flow through one of the world’s most important shipping routes. He added, “Iran will implement international laws precisely” and act quickly to resolve problems or misunderstandings.
Mechanism Aimed at Avoiding Future Incidents
Ghalibaf said the new communication system would be used if vessels require guidance or if the United States raises concerns regarding activities in the waterway. “Naturally, just as problems may arise in Lebanon or elsewhere, problems can also arise in the Strait of Hormuz.”
“As you’ve seen, on some nights there have even been clashes.” Explaining the purpose of the hotline, he said, “If Americans have any objection to anything, or if any vessels or ships need clarity on any route or anything, they can call.”
US Praises Progress in Switzerland Talks
Negotiations between Iran and the United States concluded in Switzerland on Monday. US Vice President JD Vance described the discussions as productive and said Sunday’s talks had been a positive step towards ending the conflict that began in late February.
Vance called it “very, very good day” of negotiations and said the peace talks had created “good foundation for a successful final deal” to bring the war to an end.
Strait Reopens as Shipping Traffic Resumes
The Strait of Hormuz had been closed by Iran during the early stages of the conflict. However, it reopened after US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed a peace agreement. The reopening eased concerns in global energy markets and contributed to a fall in oil prices worldwide.
Shipping activity has also resumed through the crucial waterway. Recent maritime data showed that at least two dozen vessels passed through the strait over the past 24 hours. The traffic included oil tankers and cargo ships travelling both into and out of the Persian Gulf.
Trump Says US Has ‘Total Control’ of the Strait
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Tuesday, President Donald Trump said the United States was performing well in maintaining security and stability in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump said, “We have total control of the strait. We have a navy, there was a blockade, which was more effective than dropping bombs. We’re doing very well with respect to the Hormuz Strait. We took in more oil yesterday than has ever gone through the strait… We have an open strait and we have a country that will never have a nuclear weapon.”
His comments came as both countries continue efforts to implement the peace agreement and maintain stability in one of the world’s most strategically important maritime routes.
