G7 Summit 2026 Key Takeaways: Leaders raise concern over Ukraine war, Iran tensions; Here’s what PM Modi discussed at France meet

Following the announcement of a preliminary US-Iran deal, the atmosphere at the G7 summit on Tuesday was notably calmer than expected. However, President Donald Trump’s remarks highlighted persistent divisions among the allies after he told reporters in France that the war in Ukraine had “nothing to do” with the United States.

G7 leaders, including Trump, however, have backed a joint declaration to boost military support to Ukraine. “We, the Leaders of the G7, stand united in our unwavering support for Ukraine in defending its freedom, sovereignty, and territorial integrity,” a declaration read. It also covered China, opposing “any unilateral attempts to change the status quo, in particular by force or coercion, in the East and South China Seas and across the Taiwan Strait,” Politico reported.

Shift in global development strategy

The G7 joint declaration also signals a significant shift in global development strategy. Instead of depending primarily on aid, the leading economies across the world are advocating a model centred on debt sustainability, private investment, economic self-reliance, and resilient supply chains.

G7 Summit key takeaways

  • Trump and other world leaders are currently in Evian-les-Bains for the three-day G7 summit, where a tentative deal to end the Iran-US war has been a prominent topic so far.
  • The world leaders have also held discussions about ending the Russia-Ukraine war. As the summit continues, they will be addressing the tensions in West Asia.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy joined the Group of 7 leaders at the summit for a morning working session on Tuesday. Discussions wrapped quickly, as the world leaders gathered for just 75 minutes.
  • According to a French diplomat familiar with the talks at the summit, G7 leaders, including Donald Trump, agreed to exert more pressure on Russia through sweeping sanctions targeting its oil and natural gas sectors.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he would like to conclude a trade deal with Canada before he visits the country later in 2026. Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that he would like it done by the G20 summit in Florida in mid-December.
  • With the World Cup underway in the US, Mexico, and Canada, soccer naturally became a fallback for discussion at the conference.

Finding alternatives to the Strait of Hormuz

The leaders’ discussions on the Strait of Hormuz at the summit in France included exploring alternatives at other key supply routes that could be opened to bring oil and gas out of the Persian Gulf, French Foreign Ministry spokesman Pascal Confavreux told The AP. “Part of the discussions were, ‘OK, how can we imagine, finance, and build infrastructures, sometimes on the terrestrial part, that will be able to go outside of the track of the Strait of Hormuz?’” Confavreux was quoted as saying.

G7 leaders sound concerns about Ebola

G7 leaders said that they want “a strong and coordinated response” to the Ebola outbreak in Congo. They added that their countries will deepen cooperation on “appropriate and effective travel, quarantine, and isolation procedures” for those who have been to the affected regions, AP reported.

What did PM Modi discuss at the France meeting?

During a meeting with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, PM Modi praised the country’s support for Indians. He also highlighted the importance of dialogue in West Asia and met G7 leaders. Talks were focused on improving India-UK cooperation in trade and energy while addressing issues like regional tensions and global security.
