THE First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, has called on Nigerians to protect the rights of children at all costs and intensify efforts to eliminate child labour across the country.
Tinubu made the call in a message to commemorate the 2026 World Day Against Child Labour, observed annually on June 12.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme for this year’s commemoration is: “Red Card to Child Labour: Fair Play for Children, Decent Work for Adults.”
According to the First Lady, the theme underscores the need for all citizens to reaffirm their commitment to protecting every child’s right to safety, education, dignity and well-being.
She stressed that the education of Nigerian children must never be compromised, noting that any society that fails to protect its schools risks undermining its future.
“No child should be denied the opportunity to learn, grow and achieve their dreams because they are subjected to forced labour.
“Children belong in homes, classrooms, playgrounds and safe environments where they can grow and thrive,” she said.
The First Lady urged Nigerians to continue investing in the well-being of children and creating opportunities that would empower families and communities to care for them.
“Let us all raise a red card against child labour and work together for a fairer and more promising future for every child,” she said.
The World Day Against Child Labour was launched by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in 2002 to draw global attention to the plight of child labourers and mobilise efforts to eliminate all forms of child exploitation. (NAN)
