The Federal Government have secured the release of undisclosed number of convicted Nigerian inmates in Ethiopia.

This is coming under the heels of the Prisoner Transfer Agreement between Nigeria and the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.

According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, the inmates will be returning back to Nigeria to serve the remainder of their prison terms.

However, Odumegwu-Ojukwu, in a post shared on her X handle on Friday announced that four inmates have tragically passed away with several others injured before the agreement was reached.

“We have already lost four of the Inmates, and several others are critically ill and need better care and medical assistance.

“This Prisoner Transfer Agreement with the Government of Ethiopia is a landmark.

“Under the Citizen Diplomacy imperative of the Renewed Hope Agenda, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, remains committed to the welfare and protection of Nigerian Citizens abroad.” The Minister wrote.

Video shared on X showed the visibly excited inmates cheering Odumegw-Ojukwu following her arrival at the AbaSamuel Prison where the convicts were serving their jailterm.
