The football world expected Portugal, led by the iconic Cristiano Ronaldo, to begin their World Cup campaign in style against DR Congo.
Instead, the match produced one of the tournament’s early surprises, as the Leopards stood firm and earned a result that felt like a victory for the African side.
From the first whistle, Portugal‘s reputation as one of football’s traditional powers suggested they would control proceedings.
However, DR Congo refused to be intimidated and matched their opponents with determination, discipline and belief.
Summing up the spirit of the Congolese performance, Johnny Simfukwe wrote: “When spider webs unite, they can tie up a lion. DR Congo vs Portugal: A lesson that unity, courage and belief can stand toe-to-toe with reputation and history. ⚽🌍”
Ronaldo Endures a Difficult Night
For Ronaldo, it was a frustrating outing on a stage where he has built much of his legendary status.
The veteran forward struggled to make his usual impact, prompting plenty of reactions from fans on social media.
Topman joked: “When I was growing up I wanted to play like Ronaldo, but now he plays like me 😭😭😂”
Lukas Luk-ass added: “Rumor has it Ronaldo is forcing his teammate to call him Messi. 💀👀”
Others were even harsher in their assessments.
Toffey Erzonle sarcastically imagined an alien visitor watching the game and wondering: “How? I never knew Planet Earth really lacks good footballers.”

While Portugal left with questions to answer, DR Congo’s players and supporters celebrated a landmark achievement.
Their disciplined display against one of the tournament favourites earned admiration from football fans across the world.

For many Congolese supporters, the result felt like proof that their team belongs on football’s biggest stage.
Able Tv summed up the excitement in simple terms: “The leopard’s drip is working.”
Stuart Blackwell went even further, declaring: “Shocking result!! Congo were the better side.”
