Pakistan Defence Minister Khwaja Asif on Sunday, June 21, threatened military action against India over the Indus Waters Treaty. He said that Islamabad could resort to war if it believes New Delhi’s moves on the Indus river system could endanger its water security, heightening tensions amid a deepening dispute over the suspended treaty.

‘We will go to war against India’: Khwaja Asif

Speaking to ARY News, Khwaja Asif called water a key national security concern, stating that Pakistan would be prepared to respond if it perceived a serious threat from India regarding its access to Indus basin waters. “The moment we feel that our national security — and water is part of our national security — is being threatened, we will go to war against India. Definitely,” he said.

The latest remarks came after a video clip emerged showing India’s Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil pointing to the possibility that the flow of Indus waters to Pakistan could be totally stopped by June 2028. Meanwhile, he indicated that Pakistan, which is currently grappling with a crippling water crisis, could respond if there were signs that India was moving to restrict or change water flows under the river-sharing arrangement.

Asif’s warning adds to heightened tensions that have persisted since India suspended the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty after the Pahalgam terror attack in April, 2025. which claimed 26 lives.
