Burna Boy Make History with Performancd at FIFA W/Cup Opening Ceremony

Nigerian afrobeat singer, Damini Ogulu, Burna Boy, has made history with his performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup ceremony.

 

Burna Boy headlined the ceremony alongside Colombian music star, Shakira, in Mexico on Thursday.

The performance saw him become the second ever Nigerian artist to perform at a FIFA World Opening Ceremony after Femi Kuti, son of late afrobeats legend, Fela Kuti.

 

Femi Kuti set the trail at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa where he performed alongside South African jazz legend, Hugh Masekela.

 

16 years after, Burna Boy shared the grand stage this time with Shakira as they both performed the official anthem of the 2026 FIFA World Cup edition, Dai Dai.

After the performance,  Burna Boy was captured in an emotional moment with Shakira who embraced him backstage.

 

Their performance would be followed by thr first match of the tournament with host nation, Mexico taking on South Africa.

 

The Mexicans emerged victorious with a 2-0 victory in the tense match which saw both sides shared three red cards.
