A national leader of the Peoples Redemption Party, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resign before the 2027 general elections, citing what he described as the administration’s failure to address the country’s worsening security crisis.
Speaking during an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Thursday, Baba-Ahmed argued that the growing wave of kidnappings, attacks on communities and the abduction of schoolchildren across the country demonstrate that the government has lost control of the security situation.
The former presidential aide maintained that the President has failed in one of the fundamental responsibilities of government protecting the lives and property of citizens.
“It’s clear Tinubu has no handle on the escalating menace. Everything that needed to be said by the media, National Assembly and civil society groups has been said, but Tinubu and his supporters believe that this is a problem that we can live with,” he said.
Baba-Ahmed expressed concern over the increasing vulnerability of communities across the country, noting that criminal attacks and kidnappings are no longer confined to specific regions.
According to him, the frequency of attacks on schools and the abduction of children underscore the severity of the security challenge facing the nation.
“In a civilised society, Tinubu’s record on insecurity should have cost him his seat a long time ago. It’s not too late to say that President Tinubu should resign,” he stated.
The PRP chieftain further urged Nigerians to use the ballot box to reject the President if the security situation does not improve before the next general election.
“If you check what he’s doing between now and the election, we don’t even need to wait; we will reject him,” he added.
Baba-Ahmed insisted that his call for the President’s resignation was neither partisan nor confrontational, but rather a reflection of the seriousness of the security crisis.
He argued that the two primary responsibilities of any democratic government are to protect citizens and safeguard national resources, claiming that the current administration has fallen short in those areas.
“Every part of Nigeria is now vulnerable. Children and toddlers in school are being stolen. What do you say to a president who has failed? Sir, you cannot run this country, so please step down,” he said.
The remarks come amid growing national concern over rising incidents of kidnapping, attacks on schools and other violent crimes, which have continued to dominate public discourse and political debate ahead of the 2027 elections.
Neither the Presidency nor officials of the Federal Government had publicly responded to Baba-Ahmed’s comments as of the time of filing this report.
