Hardline protesters took to the streets in several Iranian cities recently, opposing a proposed peace agreement between Iran and the United States. The demonstrations were mainly directed at Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, with critics accusing them of compromising national interests.
In the northeastern city of Mashhad, dozens of protesters gathered outside a foreign ministry office shortly after Araghchi spoke about the deal in a televised interview. Videos shared by local media showed women in black chadors waving red-and-black flags and chanting slogans against the foreign minister. Protesters called him a “compromiser” and demanded his resignation.
Similar protests were also reported in Tehran and other cities, according to international news agencies. Demonstrators expressed anger over ongoing talks with Washington, with some warning that the deal could weaken Iran’s strategic position.
Why are hardliners opposing the proposed US-Iran deal?
Hardline groups in Iran believe the agreement does not sufficiently protect the country’s interests. They argue that Iranian negotiators are offering too many concessions to secure a deal with the United States. A key concern is the potential impact on Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz.
What does the proposed agreement include?
According to reports, the framework agreement focuses on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and lifting the US naval blockade on Iranian ports. In return, Iran may receive relief from sanctions, including access to billions of dollars in frozen assets and waivers on oil exports. Talks on Iran’s nuclear programme are expected to take place separately over a 60-day period.
When could the deal be signed?
US President Donald Trump has said that the agreement could be signed as early as Sunday, with Pakistan also indicating readiness for an electronic signing ceremony. However, Iranian officials have been more cautious. A foreign ministry spokesperson said the deal would not be signed immediately but could be finalised in the coming days.
