A man who opened fire near the White House has died after being shot by security officers, US federal officials confirmed. The incident caused panic in and around the high-security zone on Saturday evening.

What exactly happened near the White House?

According to the United States Secret Service, the suspect approached a security checkpoint shortly after 6 pm ET. He then took out a weapon from his bag and began firing at officers posted at the site. Security personnel immediately responded, and an exchange of gunfire followed.

The suspect was shot during the encounter and later died. A bystander was also injured during the incident. However, officials said it is still unclear whether the person was hit by the suspect’s bullets or by return fire from officers.

The shooting took place at the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest, just outside the White House complex.

Was the President inside and how did security respond?

At the time of the incident, US President Donald Trump was inside the White House. Reports said he was engaged in discussions related to ongoing diplomatic efforts with Iran.

Security agencies quickly moved into action. Federal Bureau of Investigation personnel reached the scene to support the Secret Service. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the agency’s involvement and said updates would be shared as more details become available.

A heavy police presence was seen in the area, and access to the White House was temporarily sealed. National Guard troops were deployed, and the entire zone was cordoned off.

Journalists present on the North Lawn were asked to immediately take cover. Many said they heard “dozens of gunshots” during the incident. Reporters were directed to run to the press briefing room and told to stay in place.

Secret Service agents carrying rifles were seen moving across the complex, securing all entry points. The lockdown was lifted around 6:45 pm ET after the situation was brought under control.
