A governorship aspirant, Mascot Uzor Kalu, who is the younger brother of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has withdrawn from the Abia State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary slated for Thursday, May 21.

PrimeTimes Nigeria reports that Kalu announced his withdrawal in a letter dated May 20, 2026, and addressed to the National Chairman of the APC through the Abia State Chairman of the party.

The APC chieftain explained that his decision followed extensive consultations with family members, friends, and critical stakeholders across the state.

He explained that although the decision was difficult, it became necessary in the interest of fairness, equity, and the unity of the party in Abia State.

According to him, one of the major reasons for stepping down was the emergence of his brother, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, as the APC senatorial candidate, noting that his withdrawal would provide other aspirants the opportunity to contest for the governorship position.

Mascot Kalu further argued that Abia Central Senatorial District should be allowed to complete what he described as “its eight years of power rotation,” stressing that the principle of equity should be respected in the state’s political arrangement.

He further reaffirmed his loyalty and commitment to the APC, urging his supporters and loyalists to continue supporting the party and participating actively in its future engagements.
