The announcement comes just before the 60-day deadline set by the War Powers Resolution, a 1973 law that limits a president’s ability to carry out military action without Congress. The law required President Donald Trump to either seek approval or stop the conflict by Friday, although a 30-day extension is possible.
Defence Secretary’s Position
As per report by AP, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth told the Senate earlier that the ceasefire had paused the war. Based on this view, the administration says it has not yet reached the point where it must ask Congress for approval. The official order ending the conflict does not mention any naval blockade.
Situation at Sea Remains Tense
Despite the ceasefire being extended, Iran still controls access to the Strait of Hormuz. The US Navy is continuing efforts to block Iranian oil tankers from reaching open sea.
Emergency Military Powers Remain
Under the War Powers Resolution, if Iran attacks a US naval ship, the president, acting as commander-in-chief, can immediately order defensive military action without prior approval from Congress.
Political Pressure Builds
Democrats have called on the administration to seek formal approval for the conflict. The 60-day deadline was also expected to pressure some Republican lawmakers, who supported short-term action but wanted Congress to have a say in any longer military involvement.
