On Day 2 of the Senior Athletics Championship in Ghana, Nigerian sprinters bagged medals, with star hurdler Tobi Amusan winning the first gold medal for Nigeria.
The world record holder dominated the women’s 100m hurdles and beat her opponents to claim the top spot. She added this victory to her rich collection of medals on the continental stage.
Compatriot Adaobi Tabugbo also delivered a strong performance and won bronze in the same event. These results boosted Team Nigeria’s excellent showing at the championships.
After the race, Amusan advised young athletes not to let fear stop them from pursuing their dreams.
“First, I thank God. I don’t know the exact time yet, but I got the win — that is all that matters. I am now looking forward to the next race,” Amusan said.
She added that this race served as her season opener. “The goal is to keep racing, and I am excited for the rest of the season.”
Amusan also shared her personal story for motivation. “Don’t let anyone talk fear into your dreams. When I started hurdling, many people said nobody from Africa would do well. But guess who is the world record holder now? Me!”
On the opening day, Nigeria started the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships strongly with two medals in the women’s discus throw. Divine Oladipo won silver in her first international appearance for Nigeria after switching from Great Britain, while Obiageri Amaechi took bronze.
