The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has affirmed the senator representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, Shehu Buba, as its governorship candidate for the 2027 election in Bauchi State.
PrimeTimes Nigeria reports that Buba was affirmed on Monday in Bauchi after the party’s governorship primary.
The affirmation was announced by the PRP Deputy National Vice Chairman, North, Haruna Buhari, who also served as overseer of the Bauchi State primary election.
Buhari said the exercise was part of the PRP’s nationwide primaries conducted across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory in line with party guidelines and electoral laws.
According to him, Buba emerged as the sole cleared aspirant for the governorship ticket and met all constitutional and legal requirements.
“The party constitution provides for affirmation even where there is only one aspirant. The delegates must agree and return the candidate elected, and that process has been completed,” Buhari said.
He added that 766 delegates from the 20 local government areas of Bauchi State participated in the process and endorsed Buba.
In his acceptance speech, Buba promised to implement an ₦80,000 minimum wage for public servants if elected governor.
“I repeat, we will implement a minimum wage of ₦80,000 in the public service,” he declared.
The senator described the PRP as “a movement rooted in justice, equity and the dignity of ordinary Nigerians.”
He said the platform represented a continuation of the political ideals of the late Mallam Aminu Kano.
Buba appealed for unity within the party and extended an olive branch to supporters of other aspirants.
“To those who supported other aspirants, I extend my hand to you. From this moment forward, we move together,” he said.
He identified security, economic development, infrastructure, agriculture and mining as key priorities of his administration if elected.
‘No Investor Comes Where There’s Insecurity’
The PRP candidate said he would integrate traditional institutions, local security structures and technology-driven surveillance into a coordinated response to insecurity.
“No investor will come where there is insecurity, and no farmer will plant where there is fear,” he said.
He also promised investments in roads, storage facilities, renewable energy and industrial infrastructure.
Buba’s affirmation came the same day he formally defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the PRP.
In a statement issued earlier by his Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Sabo Mohammed, the senator said he left the APC after consultations with political associates, stakeholders and supporters across Bauchi State.
“The absence of internal democracy, lack of fairness, marginalisation of genuine party members and disregard for the voices of grassroots supporters have made it impossible to continue under the APC,” Buba said.
He added that his decision to join the PRP was based on the party’s commitment to justice, accountability, inclusiveness and people-oriented leadership.
Buba had earlier withdrawn from the APC governorship contest, alleging irregularities and constitutional breaches during the party’s primaries in Bauchi State.
He accused some party officials of announcing predetermined results without conducting actual voting.
