DSP Sani Isah was reportedly shot dead on Tuesday, May 20, 2026, while leading an operation to disperse a clash between rival thugs in Kano. According to reports, the officer, who was just three weeks away from retirement after over 30 years of meritorious service in the Nigeria Police Force, was hit by a dane gun wielded by one of the thugs. He was rushed to the hospital but was later confirmed dead.
In a statement on Saturday signed by RULAAC’s Executive Director Okechukwu Nwanguma, it criticised the apparent lack of urgency and public communication from the authorities following the incident.
“As of the time the reports were published, there had been no widely publicized announcement of arrests, no detailed briefing on investigative efforts, and no strong public assurance that the perpetrators would be brought to justice,” the group said.
The advocacy centre described the silence as “troubling,” warning that it reinforces public concerns about selective accountability in Nigeria. RULAAC emphasised that justice should not be dependent on social media trends or public outcry.
“DSP Sani Isah died in active service while carrying out his lawful duty to maintain public order and protect lives and property,” the statement noted. “His family has now been deprived of a husband, father, and breadwinner only days before his retirement. The least the authorities owe him and his family is a credible, transparent, and determined pursuit of justice.”
RULAAC called on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Kano State Commissioner of Police to provide the public with clear information on the status of investigations into the killing.
It also demanded for adequate welfare, compensation, and institutional support to the family of the deceased officer.
The group warned that the continued normalisation of violence against law enforcement officers and citizens weakens public confidence in state institutions and emboldens criminals.
“Accountability and justice must be consistent, impartial, and independent of media virality or political convenience,” RULAAC stressed.
