Fresh confusion has engulfed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following a Supreme Court judgment that nullified two rival leadership factions within the party.
The ruling, delivered on Thursday, invalidated both the Kabiru Turaki-led and Abdulrahman Mohammed-led factions over breaches of subsisting court orders.
The apex court held that the conventions that produced both factions were conducted in violation of existing judicial directives, rendering their outcomes invalid.
The decision has effectively left the party without a clearly recognised national leadership, sparking fresh claims and counterclaims among stakeholders.
Reacting to the judgment, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who is aligned with the Abdulrahman Mohammed faction, said the ruling validated his group’s position.
“The Supreme Court has validated our convention and set aside all claims to any parallel structure. What this means is that the PDP has come to stay as one united party,” he said.
However, the Chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, Adolphus Wabara, offered a different interpretation, announcing that the BoT had assumed interim leadership.
“It is with the utmost sense of duty and responsibility that the BoT of the PDP assumes leadership of our great party today,” Wabara said.
He explained that the judgment nullified both the November 2025 Ibadan convention and the March 2026 Abuja convention.
Wabara stated that all actions taken by both factions, including appointments and decisions, were invalid.
“The implication of today’s judgment is that all actions taken… are illegal, null and void,” he said.
He added that the BoT would take steps to stabilise the party and restore order.
The BoT chairman disclosed that an emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee would be convened to establish an interim National Working Committee.
According to him, the move is aimed at fostering reconciliation and returning the party to stability.
The PDP has been grappling with internal disputes that led to parallel conventions and competing leadership structures.
The latest judgment has further deepened uncertainty within the party as stakeholders await clarity on its leadership direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.
