Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant in Abia State, Chief John Okiyi-Kalu, says his ambition is driven by a desire to “spread prosperity people can see and feel” and fully industrialise the state through innovation and inclusive development.
Okiyi-Kalu made the remarks on Friday in Abia State shortly after appearing before the PDP governorship screening committee led by former Governor Ahmed Makarfi, describing the exercise as smooth and satisfactory.
He said his participation in the race was a continuation of his long-standing loyalty to the PDP, noting that he has remained in the party since 1999 without defection despite political challenges.
According to him, his vision for Abia includes large-scale job creation, industrial growth, improved welfare for workers, and expanded educational and health opportunities for residents.
The aspirant said he intends to prioritise manufacturing clusters in garments and footwear, aimed at creating jobs for young people and boosting the state’s industrial base.
He also pledged reforms in education, including annual bursaries of N100,000 for tertiary institution students from Abia, as well as foreign scholarship opportunities for at least 100 indigenes every year.
On workers’ welfare, Okiyi-Kalu proposed a minimum after-tax salary of N120,000 for the lowest-ranked civil servants, alongside improved promotions and allowances.
He further promised investment in infrastructure, including roads and flyovers in key areas such as Aba and Umuahia, while describing road construction as only a basic component of governance.
The PDP aspirant also outlined plans for agricultural expansion, particularly palm production, saying Abia could become a leading palm oil hub in Nigeria with improved seedlings and large-scale cultivation.
On education, he proposed stronger school security measures, including fencing public schools, providing accommodation for teachers, and improving safety and learning environments across the state.
Okiyi-Kalu criticised what he described as “propaganda-driven governance,” urging residents to verify government claims and focus on measurable outcomes.
He, however, emphasised that his focus remained on delivering tangible development, strengthening institutions, and restoring confidence in public service delivery if elected governor of Abia State.
