The Nigerian community in the United Kingdom has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of Kayode Ogunbodede, a Nigerian father of two popularly known as Kay, who reportedly died in his sleep in Swansea, Wales.
Kay was said to have passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, May 26, 2026, leaving behind his wife and their two young daughters, aged six years and six months.
According to information shared through a GoFundMe appeal created by Olatunde Owoeye-Phoster, the tragic incident has left the family devastated and struggling to cope with the painful loss.
Describing the late Ogunbodede as a peaceful and cheerful man, Owoeye-Phoster said Kay was widely respected among Nigerians and other Africans living in the UK. He was also an active member of Elim City Church in Swansea as well as the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
The statement explained that Kay was known for his calm nature, kindness and willingness to help others whenever he could. Friends and community members reportedly remembered him as someone who always carried a smile and supported people around him without hesitation.
“Our lives changed in ways we cannot imagine when our brother, husband and father, Kayode Ogunbodede, popularly called Kay, passed away suddenly in his sleep,” the appeal stated.
The fundraiser was launched to support Kay’s wife, who is currently a student and not employed, while also helping to cover funeral expenses, childcare costs, family bills and the future education of the children.
The organisers described the situation as especially difficult because Kay’s wife is still adjusting to life as a new mother while dealing with the emotional pain of losing her husband unexpectedly.
“Everybody who has heard of this sad incident is willing to help, and this serves as a platform to organise support for one of our own,” the statement added.
As of the time the report was filed, £480 had been raised out of the £18,000 target set for the family.
Kay’s death adds to the growing number of recent cases involving Nigerians in the UK whose families have turned to public fundraising after losing loved ones unexpectedly.
In recent months, reports emerged of other Nigerians, including Herbert and Ademola Oke, who also died suddenly in the UK, leaving behind grieving families seeking financial support.
