Youths in Somolu Federal Constituency of Lagos State have rejected attempts to introduce religious and ethnic sentiments into the area’s political space, ahead of 2027 forthcoming elections.
The youths, under the aegis of the All Progressives Congress (APC), gave the warning during a press briefing on Thursday at Solution Arena, Lagos.
They said divisive narratives could threaten the peace, unity and harmonious coexistence the constituency had enjoyed over the years.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Mr Caleb Olonitola, APC Youth Leader in Somolu Federal Constituency, described the development as unfortunate, divisive and dangerous.
Olonitola recalled that similar tactics in the past created tension and unhealthy divisions among residents.
According to him, many residents are yet to recover from the effects of politically-motivated religious and ethnic sentiments that once disrupted the harmony Somolu was known for.
He said the constituency had always been recognised for peaceful coexistence, mutual respect and political maturity among people of different faiths and ethnic backgrounds.
Olonitola stressed that politics in the constituency should focus on competence, quality leadership, development and welfare of the people, rather than attempts to manipulate voters along religious or tribal lines.
He also dismissed allegations that any religious group had been marginalised in the local political structure.
According to him, both Christians and Muslims in Somolu have continued to benefit from appointments, leadership positions and political opportunities over the years.
“Some individuals are deliberately twisting facts to create unnecessary tension for political advantage.
“We call on political actors, supporters and members of the media to act responsibly and avoid inflammatory narratives capable of causing division within the constituency,” he said.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to unity, peace and progress in the constituency.
The youth in their hundreds embarked on a solidarity walk from Onipanu area to Okemeta in Bariga area of Lagos State to express their concerns.
The youths added that Somolu belonged to all residents, irrespective of ethnic or religious affiliations, stressing that preserving the area’s peace and stability remained a collective responsibility. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
