INEC recognises Baba-Ahmed as PRP national chairman after convention

Hakeem Baba Ahmed

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has updated its official portal to list Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed as the National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party, PRP.

The update follows the outcome of the party’s National Convention held in Abuja on March 28.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja by the PRP National Publicity Secretary, Ishaq Muhammed.

According to him, the revised leadership list on INEC’s portal also reflects Mr Kanu Uchenna as National Secretary, Dr Bayawo Abdullahi as National Treasurer, Mr Chuka Patrick as National Financial Secretary, and Mr Vincent Okudu as National Legal Adviser.

Muhammed noted that the development represents formal recognition by INEC of the party’s new leadership after the successful conduct of its convention.

However, the development comes amid deepening internal disagreements within the party, as a faction known as the PRP Vanguard has rejected the convention that produced Baba-Ahmed.

The group described the exercise as unlawful and accused the emerging leadership of deviating from the party’s founding principles.

The faction’s National Chairman, Abdulmajid Yakubu-Daudus, alleged that the leadership that emerged from the Abuja convention was seeking to transform the PRP into a platform for “discredited politicians” from other opposition parties.

“The PRP remains a socialist-oriented party committed to the emancipation of the masses, not a vehicle for capitalist interests.

“The PRP is not for sale to the highest bidder.

“It was founded by the working class, progressive intellectuals and the toiling masses, and it will remain so,” he said.
