The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Saturday, June 20, 2026, for bye-elections to fill vacant seats in the National Assembly and a state assembly across six states in Nigeria.
PrimeTimes Nigeria reports that the elections will take place in Kebbi, Kano, Ondo, Rivers, Nasarawa, and Enugu States.
The exercise will cover four senatorial districts, one House of Representatives seat, and one State House of Assembly seat.
In Ondo State, the seat became vacant after Senator Jimoh Ibrahim moved on to become Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
In Rivers State, the seat was left empty following the death of Senator Barinada Mpigi. In Nasarawa State, Senator Godiya Akwashika passed away, while in Enugu State, the seat became vacant after the death of Senator Okey Ezea.
Kano State will also hold a House of Representatives election, while Kebbi State will conduct a poll for a vacant seat in its State House of Assembly.
The commission also fixed the same date for the Ekiti State governorship election, meaning several polls will take place across the country on that day.
INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan announced the timetable during the swearing-in of new National Commissioner Rear Admiral Jamila Malafa (rtd.).
He said the commission is preparing for multiple elections, adding that both the Ekiti governorship poll and the bye-elections will be held on June 20, 2026, across all affected areas.
