President Bola Tinubu has opened up about the difficult path that led to his emergence as Nigeria’s President, describing the journey as one marked by sacrifice, pressure and political battles.
The President made the remarks on Friday while receiving members of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum at his Lagos residence during a Sallah homage visit led by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
Speaking before the governors, Tinubu reflected on the events that preceded the 2023 presidential election and acknowledged the support he received from political allies who stood by him throughout the process.
According to him, the struggle to secure the nation’s highest office was far from easy, noting that he endured significant challenges and opposition along the way.
“Instead of dodging the bullet, I took it. I took a punch in the chin, a very hard one.
“We stuck together the time I faced the challenge of trying to become the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“It was very challenging. It was tough for those who were with me. Some kept faith.
“I decided to take the effort to campaign. I didn’t disclose to anybody what I would do. Many of you took the risk and went ahead with me because of the party platform and everything,” he said.
The President specifically appreciated governors and political stakeholders who supported his ambition despite uncertainties surrounding the race. He praised their loyalty and resilience, saying their commitment contributed to the success of the campaign.
Tinubu’s comments come amid ongoing discussions about the political developments that shaped the 2023 elections and the role played by governors in mobilising support across different states.
The visit by the governors formed part of the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations and provided an opportunity for the President and state leaders to exchange views on governance and national development.
Members of the forum used the occasion to extend Sallah greetings to the President and reaffirm their commitment to working with the Federal Government on issues affecting the country.
Since assuming office in May 2023, Tinubu has repeatedly defended the difficult decisions taken by his administration, including major economic reforms which he says are necessary to reposition the nation’s economy.
