THE Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has commended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Justice James Omotosho for his bold, courageous and landmark judgment in the conviction of former minister of power, Saleh Mamman, over a ₦33.8 billion fraud linked to major national power projects.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, HURIWA said the judgment represents a significant victory for accountability, rule of law and the fight against systemic corruption that has long undermined Nigeria’s development, especially in critical infrastructure sectors such as power generation.
The group praised the EFCC for its persistence, professionalism and diligence throughout the lengthy investigation and prosecution, noting that the commission demonstrated uncommon institutional resilience by calling 17 witnesses and tendering 43 exhibits in a case involving highly influential political office holders.
HURIWA stated that the conviction sends a strong message that public office must never be treated as an avenue for personal enrichment, but rather as a trust that must be discharged with integrity and accountability.
The association also lauded Justice James Omotosho for what it described as exceptional judicial courage, forthrightness and independence in delivering judgment in a high-profile and politically sensitive case.
According to HURIWA, the court’s decision to impose a severe custodial sentence and order full forfeiture of recovered assets underscores the judiciary’s renewed commitment to ensuring that corruption does not go unpunished, regardless of the status or influence of those involved.
The group further described the ruling as a reassuring signal to Nigerians that the justice system can still rise above pressure and deliver consequences for large-scale economic crimes.
HURIWA urged anti-corruption agencies and the judiciary to sustain the momentum, insisting that consistent enforcement of the law remains the most effective deterrent against public sector corruption.
The organisation added that Nigeria’s development can only be guaranteed when institutions such as the EFCC and the courts are strengthened and supported to act without fear or favour in holding public officials accountable.
