Former Minister of State for Science and Technology, Chief Henry Ikoh, has formally challenged the outcome of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary in Abia State.
In a protest letter submitted on Monday to the APC Governorship Primary Election Appeal Committee in Umuahia, Ikoh rejected the declaration of Chief Eric Opiah as the winner of the primary.
The former minister maintained that he was duly adopted as the consensus governorship candidate of the party by 13 out of the 18 members of the State Working Committee (SWC), in accordance with the APC’s guidelines for consensus candidacy.
According to Ikoh, the adoption followed wide-ranging consultations among party stakeholders across the state, with the aim of promoting unity and producing a broadly acceptable candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
He expressed surprise at the subsequent declaration of another aspirant as the primary winner, despite what he described as a valid and documented consensus arrangement supported by the majority of the state party leadership.
“I remain a loyal and committed member of the APC, and my decision to approach the Appeal Committee is borne out of the need to uphold the truth and safeguard the credibility of our great party,” Ikoh stated.
“The consensus arrangement that produced my candidature was genuine, lawful, and supported by 13 out of 18 SWC members.”
Ikoh appealed to APC members and supporters in Abia State to remain calm, peaceful, and confident that the national leadership and the Appeal Committee will dispense justice fairly and transparently.
