Omowunmi, the widow of late singer Mohbad, has opened up on her sour relationship with his father.

In an interview with Channels Television, she shed more light on the DNA issue and her broken relationship with her father-in-law. Omowunmi said she and her father-in-law used to be best of friends but fell out after she had Liam.

Omowunmi disclosed that their fallout began with Liam’s naming ceremony and her husband’s forgiveness of his mother. She said after her husband’s death, she called his father, and all he was talking about was her husband’s property.

The mother of one said their relationship has reached a point where the whole issue can’t be settled anymore. She explained that Mohbad’s father wants the DNA result to be negative so he can claim his properties.

“My father-in-law and I used to be best of friends, but we fell out after I had Liam. It was a family feud over naming-ceremony issues and my husband forgiving his mum. After my husband’s death and the whole issue started, I called him, and all he talked about was my husband’s property.

We have gotten to a point where I don’t think the whole issue can be settled anymore, because what he wants is for the DNA result to be negative and for him to take possession of my husband’s royalty. I have never opposed the DNA”.

Earlier this year, a Court had selected three facilities for the DNA tests – two in the UK and one in the US. According to reports, one facility was chosen from Baba Mohbad, another from Wunmi, and the third was selected independently by the court.

Recall that following the singer’s death, in 2023, many have been clamoring for a DNA test to be done on Liam, his son to ascertain his paternity. Even Mohbad’s father had called for DNA to be done on his son.

In September, a Magistrates’ Court in Ikorodu, Lagos State, ordered a deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) test to be carried out on Liam, the son of Mohbad. The singer’s father, through his counsel, argued that clarity on paternity is essential given its implications for the child’s welfare and the mother’s maintenance obligations. Mohbad’s widow, represented by her lawyer, didn’t oppose the application, leading the court to grant the order as requested.

In the wake of the test, Mohbad’s family had banned his widow from using their family’s surname in public or private records until lawful confirmation of paternity was obtained. They noted that no statutory or customary marriage was contracted between the late Mohbad and Wunmi Adebanjo.

Reacting to it, Wunmi’s lawyer, Kabir Akingbolu, described the directive as illegal and sentimental. He accused Aloba’s family of frustrating the DNA process despite multiple court orders.

Wunmi also took legal action to safeguard the late singer’s property, preventing any unauthorised claims to his estate.

In a recorded statement, the singer’s father dropped a bombshell on his widow, detailing clarification, questioning who collected her bride price and doubling down on the need for a DNA test. He denied that any traditional wedding had taken place and claimed that Mohbad had initially promised to formalise the marriage but later withdrew after alleging that Cynthia was unfaithful.

Mohbad’s father claimed that these circumstances prompted him to request a DNA test to confirm the child’s parentage.
