Some worshippers and residents at the Ilorin Central Eid praying ground on Wednesday broke into anti-government chants against the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
PrimeTimes Nigeria reports that the chants reportedly began as the governor’s convoy struggled to move through the large crowd gathered for the Eid-el-Kabir prayers in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
In a video circulating online, sections of the crowd were heard chanting in Yoruba, “APC wọlé lọ bi awada bi ère,” meaning “APC went down like a joke.”
Others also chanted, “Ramoni wole lọ bi awada bi ere,” meaning “AbdulRahman went down like a joke.”
The incident comes amid growing political tension and realignments ahead of the 2027 governorship election in the state.
PrimeTimes Nigeria recalls that the APC had settled on the Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Yakubu Danladi, as its preferred governorship candidate.
Danladi is believed to be a close ally and political protégé of Governor AbdulRazaq.
PDP Picks Kawu
Meanwhile, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) picked a former Director of the Rural Electrification Agency, Bolakale Kawu, as its governorship candidate.
The development comes amid concerns over insecurity, economic hardship, governance issues and internal political divisions within the ruling party.
Suspected bandits had reportedly invaded Yashikira community in Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State on Sunday.
The attackers were said to have set the Emir’s palace ablaze and abducted several residents, including women, children and some of the Emir’s wives.
