Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has expressed confidence in the newly elected President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Prof. Afekhide Omoti, describing his election as a well-deserved recognition of excellence, professionalism, and years of dedicated service to humanity.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Patrick Ebojele, on Tuesday, the governor said Prof. Omoti’s emergence as leader of the country’s foremost medical association is a source of pride to Edo State and a reflection of the caliber of professionals the state continues to produce.
Governor Okpebholo highlighted Prof. Omoti’s extensive contributions to the medical profession, particularly in the fields of ophthalmology, research, healthcare administration, and medical advocacy, noting that his achievements have earned him recognition both within Nigeria and internationally.
He pointed to Prof. Omoti’s previous roles including Chairman of the Edo State Branch of the NMA, Chairman of the National Eye Health Committee, and former Chairman of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), UBTH Chapter as evidence of the solid foundation he brings to his new national role.
The governor also commended Prof. Omoti’s impressive academic contributions, including over 140 scientific publications and active participation in global medical conferences, describing these as a testament to his commitment to advancing healthcare delivery.
Okpebholo expressed confidence that Prof. Omoti would bring his wealth of experience, integrity, and leadership capacity to bear in steering the NMA to greater heights over the next two years, and assured him of the full support and goodwill of the Edo State government and its people.
Prof. Omoti, a consultant ophthalmologist and Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Benin, as well as Honorary Consultant Ophthalmologist at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, was elected at the NMA Annual General Congress and Delegates Meeting held in Kano on Saturday, May 2, 2026.
He secured 253 votes to defeat his closest rival, Dr. Nosa Lancy Orhue, who garnered 143 votes.
