A magistrate court sitting in Abia state, has ordered the remand of one Ekeke Nnamdi in police custody over alleged forgery involving the seal and signature of Barrister Agbai Igwe, a deceased legal practitioner.
The suspect was accused of falsely presenting himself as a legal practitioner and forging the late lawyer’s credentials to prepare a deed of power of attorney in favour of one Okoro Onyekachi Christiana.
He was arraigned on a three-count charge marked MAN/182c/2026: commissioner of police vs Ekeke Nnamdi, M, 43 years, bordering on conspiracy, impersonation, and forgery.
The prosecution alleged that the defendant knew the lawyer had died two years earlier but still used his seal and signature to execute legal documents, an act said to be punishable under Sections 467(1)(b), 516A(a), and 484 of the Criminal Code, Cap 80, Laws of Abia State, 2005.
When the charges were read in court, the defendant pleaded not guilty.
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Aba Branch, who are the complainant in the matter, was represented by its chairman, Charles Onuchukwu.
Iheanyi Anyamele, a counsel to the defendant applied for bail, but the prosecution opposed the request, arguing that granting bail could interfere with ongoing police investigations.
Ruling on the application, Magistrate Lawrence Udo Okite ordered that the defendant be remanded in police custody pending further proceedings.
The court held that the prosecution had presented sufficient grounds to justify continued detention at this stage of the trial.
