A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party loyal to Tanimu Turaki has adopted former President Goodluck Jonathan as its consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
The motion was moved by Edo State PDP chairman Dr. Tony Aziegbemi and seconded by Sanusi Daggash at the party’s special convention on Friday.
Jerry Gana, chairman of the PDP Special Convention Committee, put the question to delegates. The response was overwhelmingly “yes,” with no “nay” recorded.
The faction had originally planned to hold the convention at ‘A’ Class Event Centre in Wuse II, Abuja.
The event was moved to an alternative venue after the Federal Capital Territory Administration threatened to revoke land titles of any building used to host the faction. FCTA said it would sanction event centres and hotels that allow “illegal organisations” to gather.
The police also barricaded all roads leading to the venue.
National Publicity Secretary of the PDP faction, Ini Ememobong, said Jonathan stayed away from the convention because of the security situation. He said the plan was designed to embarrass him, hence he stayed away.
He said a date will be announced where the ex-president would be handed the flag of the party.
Jonathan has not publicly commented on the endorsement. Another PDP faction has already picked Sandy Onor as its presidential candidate.
