A Federal High Court judge attached to the Kano Division, Justice Mohammed Nasir Yunusa, has reportedly slumped and died at his residence.
It was gathered that the judge collapsed in his living room and was rushed to a hospital, where medical personnel on duty confirmed him dead.
Sources within the Federal High Court in Abuja told newsmen on Saturday that the late judge was buried on Friday in line with Islamic rites.
“Yes, the judge died Thursday evening and he has been buried. He was very hardworking during his lifetime.
“You know he handled many high-profile cases and dispensed justice accordingly,” a source said.
The Director of Information of the Federal High Court of Nigeria, Catherine Oby Christopher, also confirmed the development, stating that Justice Yunusa died at the State Medical Centre in Kano.
According to reports, one of the notable cases he presided over involved post-2023 general election disputes, including matters relating to the Labour Party and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In one of his rulings, Justice Yunusa held that certain plaintiffs lacked the legal standing to challenge the issuance of certificates of return, noting that the court had no jurisdiction to grant such relief in the circumstances.
“This court lacks jurisdiction to make an order for the issuance of certificate of return. They are at liberty to seek redress in the appropriate Division of the court,” he had ruled.
The case arose from an application filed by Ibrahim Haruna-Ibrahim, seeking to nullify certificates of return issued to Labour Party candidates declared winners in Kano and other parts of the federation, including the FCT.
The respondents in the suit included the Labour Party and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
