Arnold made the remarks on Monday in a public statement in which he explained why he believes such a political alliance would not be in Nigeria’s interest and urged Obi to choose a different running mate.
Arnold said he has an open mind about Obi but made it clear that his support would end if Obi chooses Kwankwaso as a running mate. According to him, such a ticket would not represent meaningful political change.
“I like Peter Obi. I am not sold on him yet, but he has potential and I have an open mind,” Arnold said.
“What will close my mind instantly, without any wiggle room, is an Obi-Kwankwaso ticket.”
Arnold contended that Kwankwaso’s long political career and repeated movement across political parties raises questions about his political consistency and alliances.
He considered Kwankwaso as a figure who has remained closely tied to powerful northern interests despite changing platforms over the years.
He also referred to Kwankwaso’s tenure as Minister of Defence, linking it to security-related events during that period and raising questions about decisions made while he was in office.
Arnold alleged that these developments formed part of the reasons he remains opposed to Kwankwaso playing a major role in a future administration.
“The Defence Minister through every one of those events was Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso,” he said.
Arnold also criticised Kwankwaso’s record as governor of Kano State. He pointed to the introduction of Sharia law and the establishment of the Hisbah Board, which he said created a religious enforcement structure that has remained controversial over the years.
He further referenced past allegations involving pension funds in Kano State and mentioned more recent claims linked to procurement investigations involving Kwankwaso’s nephew.
Arnold said these issues add to concerns about Kwankwaso’s suitability for national office.
“Sharia. Hisbah. Pension funds. Pharmaceutical contracts. The defence ministry during a genocide. A different party every cycle. And now the vice presidency,” Arnold said.
Arnold stressed that his opposition was not directed at Obi personally but at the possibility of a political partnership with Kwankwaso.
He said he believes Obi should choose a running mate who would better reflect the kind of change many Nigerians expect.
“That is why I will actively oppose any ticket with Kwankwaso on it. No matter who is on top,” he said.
Addressing Obi directly, Arnold said: “Peter Obi, if you want my open mind, pick a running mate who is not a puppet of the Sultan.”
