The lawmaker representing Sokoto South Senatorial District, Aminu Tambuwal, has stepped down from the race ahead of the 2027 election.
PrimeTimes Nigeria reports that following the withdrawal of Tambuwal, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has endorsed the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Faruk Yabo, as a consensus candidate.
Similarly, Manir Muhammad Dan’iya, the former Deputy Governor under Tambuwal during his tenure as Sokoto State Governor, has emerged as the ADC consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 election in the state.
Recall that before the 2023 general election, Tambuwal, a presidential aspirant under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stepped down for former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar.
In other news, Atiku recently downplayed the influence of top Northern politicians, including former governors Rabiu Kwankwaso, Tambuwal and Nasir El-Rufai.
Atiku, during an interview on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time’ programme, asserted that he is the most popular northern politician.
While assessing the influence of key northern politicians, Atiku insisted that no current or emerging leader in the region matches his political reach and support.
According to the ADC chieftain, despite the popularity of the key Northern politicians, none of them has a wider voter base across the North than he does.
He further claimed that Kwankwaso’s influence remains largely confined to Kano State, adding that even within the state, political support is now divided between him and Governor Abba Yusuf.
