Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, secured a sweeping victory in the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary after polling 233,335 votes to defeat his rival, Yilchini Jan Bida, who garnered 3,070 votes across the 17 Local Government Areas of the state.
The results, announced on Friday night at the APC State Secretariat in Jos by the Chairman of the APC Committee for the Plateau State House of Assembly and Governorship Primary Election, Fidelis Mnyim Bemse, showed that Mutfwang dominated the contest in all wards and polling units across the state.
Bemse disclosed that the exercise recorded 240,832 registered voters, while 236,405 votes were cast during the primary election.
According to the returning officer, the governor posted decisive victories in several local government areas, including his home council of Mangu, as well as Jos North, Kanke, the home LGA of Bida, Kanam, Jos South, Shendam, Langtang North, and Wase.
Providing a breakdown of the results, Bemse said Mutfwang polled 26,652 votes against Bida’s 68 votes in Jos North LGA, while in Mangu LGA, the governor secured 28,095 votes compared to Bida’s 46 votes.
In Kanam LGA, Mutfwang recorded 19,595 votes against Bida’s 119 votes, while in Shendam LGA, the governor polled 17,208 votes as Bida secured 389 votes.
The retired naval officer, Bida, however, recorded his strongest performances in Qua’an Pan and Kanke LGAs, where he secured 687 votes and 481 votes respectively.
Declaring the final outcome, Bemse said Mutfwang fulfilled all constitutional requirements of the APC and emerged with the highest number of valid votes cast in the exercise.
“Therefore, Caleb Mutfwang, having satisfied the requirements of the APC constitutional guidelines and scored the highest number of votes, is hereby declared the winner of the primary election and returned elected,” Bemse announced.
With the victory, Mutfwang has emerged as the official APC governorship candidate in Plateau State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
